This piece is a poster advertising a performance of the song “The Sound of Silence” by Simon and Garfunkel. The poster is 24″ by 36″ and would be hung up around Miami University’s campus. It has a creative front that follows a linear grid, and an informational back that describes more of the song and Simon and Garfunkel as a group.

Process

To start my process, I made up sketches to get ideas of what I wanted to do with the grid and the necessary information for the poster.

Next, I picked out the color palette that best matched the song’s vibe for the poster. This step, though small, really brought my designs to life.

The final step of the process was a trial-and-error process with the fonts, colors, and grid angles. I played around with many fonts and even tried to create some of my own, until I landed on what worked best. I then worked on the layout and shading of both the front and back to achieve the most effective lighting gradient. While doing all of this, I was also working out how to make sure all of the mandatory information fit into the layout well.
