Through these processes, I learned patience and the importance of attention to detail. All of these works are 18” x 24” graphite drawings. The piece all the way to the left is a contour drawing to focus on proper outlines, the vertical piece in the middle is a cross-contour drawing to work on shape and proportion, and the piece all the way to the right is a fully rendered still life. I learned in this piece to work with charcoal to deepen my work on top of the graphite.
Process/Leading Works
This first work is a simple contour drawing to really focus on line work and rely less on shading to show shape. This tested my ability to still show light and shadow with full-blown shading, but just by boxing out where light falls. This is a good foundation for drawings that will eventually have shading.
The second piece shown is a cross-contour piece. This is to show the curvature of the items and still pay attention to the line details that create the shape. This gets a little busier, which adds to the challenge of precision.
Final Drawing
The final piece is a fully rendered still life done with graphite and charcoal. The graphite was to map out the general contour of all of the objects, and the charcoal was used to create shadows and depth to each item.
